Safe Routes to School

Children travelling to school (image: J Bewley)The Executive is keen for more children to use public transport to get to school rather than being transported by private car or, wherever possible, to take more active options such as cycling or walking.

In order to encourage this, the Executive has made available to local authorities the Cycling, Walking and Safer Streets allocation and funding for -

  • 20mph zones around primary schools
  • Related safety projects

In addition, the Executive funds School Travel Co-ordinator (STC) posts in all Scottish local authorities to -

  • Promote active travel options for school children
  • Increase the proportion of non-car based travel associated to school

To support these posts, the Executive is funding Sustrans' Safe Routes to Schools Team who are a national source of expertise on the subject, as well as a provider of training and resource materials for those promoting active school travel options.
