Motor Vehicles Licensed

The total number of motor vehicles licensed in Scotland was over 2.6 million at the end of 2007. It has increased steadily over the years, with rises of 31% since 1997, 28% since 1998 and 24% since 1999. However, there were fewer vehicles per 100 population in Scotland (51) than in Great Britain as a whole (58) in 2007.

About 84% of all vehicles licensed in Scotland in 2007 were cars. Nine per cent were light goods vehicles, 3% were motorcycles and heavy goods vehicles accounted for about 1%. Thirty three per cent of all vehicles licensed in 2007 ran on diesel, compared with 21% in 1997.

The number of new vehicles registered in Scotland rose by 3% to 251,000 in 2007. Recent years show rises of 22% since 1997; 20% since 1998 and 16% since 1999.

Eighty one per cent of new vehicles licensed in 2007 were cars. Forty three per cent of all newly-registered vehicles ran on diesel, compared with 23% in 1999 (the first year for which such a figure is available).
