Language

Information on the extent of Gaelic medium education is collected as part of the Scottish Government pupil census in Scotland. Information on Gaelic medium education was first collected in the pupil census in 2005 and this was continued in 2006 and 2007.

Results from the Pupil Census carried out in September 2007 show that, in publicly funded schools:

  • In 2007, there were 2,601 pupils receiving at least some of the curriculum (other than Gaelic) through Gaelic medium education.
  • A further 1,096 were taught Gaelic only through the medium of Gaelic and another 5,049 were taught Gaelic as a learner.
  • Changes in percentages can be observed for all of these categories, in the table below:

  • The number of school entries in 2006/07 for Higher grade Gaelic (learners) was 107. This was a decrease of 16 compared to the previous year.
  • The number of school entries in 2006/2007 for Higher grade Gaidhlig (not learners) was 97, this was a decrease of 18 compared to the previous year.
