Public Sector Employment

As at Quarter 2 (Q2) 2008 there were 575,700 people employed within the public sector in Scotland. This was a decrease of 1,700 since the previous year and an increase of 48,300 since 1999. In Q2 2008 the number of people employed in the private sector was 1,960,800. This is a decrease of 6,300 on the previous year and an increase of 204,000 since 1999. Public sector employment accounted for 22.7% of total employment in Q2 2008 which is unchanged since previous year and down by 0.4 percentage points since 1999.

In Q2 2008 public sector employment in Scotland consisted of Local Government including police and fire and related services (54.4%), NHS (27.4%), Civil Service (8.5%), Public Corporations (4.2%), Non Departmental Public Bodies (2.8%) and Armed Forces (2.1%).
