Prevalence of Problem Drug Users
There were an estimated 51,582 problem drug users in Scotland in 2003, corresponding to a rate of 1.84% of the population aged 15 to 54. A previous study estimated that in 2000 there were 55,800 problem drug users, but due to the small sample size of the earlier study, the apparent reduction over time was not statistically significant.
The Scottish Government has established a National Indicator to decrease the estimated number of problem drug users in Scotland by 2011.
