Policy and co-ordination across Great Britain
Due to the nature of invasive non-native species, efforts to tackle invasive non-native species require cross-border co-ordination. Invasive species are best addressed within natural geographic and ecological boundaries. Effective collaboration at a GB level is therefore important. The Scottish Government are working with Defra and the Welsh Assembly Government to ensure strategic policy on invasive non-native species is co-ordinated across Great Britain.
In March 2001 a working group was set up to review invasive non-native species policy throughout Great Britain. The group made 8 key recommendations for further action, which were set out in A Review of Non-Native Species Policy published by Defra in March 2003.
GB Mechanism and GB Non-native Species Secretariat
A GB Programme Board was established in March 2005 to ensure strategic co-ordination of policy on invasive non-native species across GB. The GB Programme Board is supported by an independent Secretariat. For more information on the GB Mechanism please see the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat website.
Draft GB Invasive Non-Native Species Framework Strategy
A public consultation on the draft GB Invasive Non-native Species Framework Strategy was held between 28 February 2007 and 23 May 2007. The overall aim of the Framework Strategy is to minimise the risks posed, and reduce the negative impacts caused by invasive non-native species in Great Britain. For more information, please see the GB Non-Native Species Secretariat website.
