Introduction
Biodiversity is:
"The variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part, this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems."
Convention on Biological Diversity, 1992.
At the Earth Summit on Sustainable Development in 1992, over 150 Governments including the UK Government signed up to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Scotland as part of the UK has an international obligation to conserve and protect Biodiversity.
The Scottish Government works towards fulfilling Scotland's contribution to the UK's obligations. This process is supported by the Scottish Biodiversity Forum, a working partnership of Government, its agencies, sponsored bodies, non-government organisations, businesses, private organisations and individuals.
