Background

The primary function of the Drinking Water Quality Division is the administration of the Water Supply (Water Quality) (Scotland) Regulations. The Division also provides technical and logistical support to the Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland in respect of any enforcement duties that may be required.

The Division is multi-disciplinary, consisting of professional water engineers, scientists and administrative support. It provides professional advice on drinking water supplies and water resources to the Drinking Water Quality Regulator and the Scottish Executive. The Division meets with Regulators from across the UK, Europe and other parts of the world to ensure that the regulatory regime applied in Scotland remains current and effective.

In addition to monitoring the quality of public drinking water supplies across Scotland, the Division oversees the functions that are delegated to local authorities under the Private Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations 1992.
