DESIGNATED SHELLFISH WATERS
The Scottish Government recognises that shellfish need clean healthy water in which to grow in order to ensure a good quality product which is safe for consumers to eat. One hundred and twelve waters in Scotland are designated as Shellfish Waters under the following Directions, which together with the Surface Waters (Shellfish) (Classification) (Scotland) Regulations 1997 and the Surface Waters (Shellfish)(Scotland) Directions 1997 transposed the Shellfish Waters Directive (79/923/EEC) into Scots Law:

*Note: The 2006 Direction supersedes all the previous Directions, changing all National Grid References to 10 digits, and amalgamating some adjoining waters.
In December 2006 the European Parliament replaced the existing Shellfish Water s Directive (79/923/EEC) with the codified Shellfish Waters Directive (2006/113/EC). The reason for this was because it contained cross-references to other Directives which have now either been codified or repealed. The standards, methods of analysis, and minimum sampling and measuring frequency are the same as in the previous Shellfish Waters Directive (79/923/EEC).
The Surface Waters (Shellfish) (Classification) (Scotland) Regulations 1997 and all related Directions are now being remade to transpose the new Shellfish Waters Directive (2006/113/EC) into Scots Law.
Scotland's shellfish industry is a prime example of sustainable development. It provides valuable jobs in some of our remotest areas, and the quality of the water in which shellfish grow is important when marketing the product worldwide. These designations will be good for both the industry and for the wider environment, and were made following full consultation with all stakeholders, including the industry, SEPA, and the water authorities.

1. Arbroath - An area bounded by the coast and a line from NO6699841777 (Deil's Heid) generally south to a point NO6690040800 then south-west to a point NO6270038700 and then north-west to meet the coast at NO 6219839305 (mouth of the Elliot Water ) and extending to MHWS.
2. St Andrew's to Fife Ness - An area bounded by the coast and a line from NO5134716847 (St Andrew's Castle) generally north-east to a point NO52 0001 7700 and then south-east to a point NO5990014900 lying about 1km off Babbet Ness and thence to a point NO6480009700 and then west for 1km to NO6365809814 (Fife Ness) and extending to MHWS.
3. Fife Ness to Elie - An area bounded by the coast and a line from NO6365809814 (Fife Ness) east for 1km to a point NO6480009700 and thence south-west via a point NO5690002100 (about 1km off Billow Ness) to a point NT5030098700 and thence north-west to rejoin the coast NT4967399327 (Elie Ness) and extending to MHWS.
4. North Berwick to Dunbar - An area bounded by the coast and a line from a point on the coast at NT5700085509 north to a point NT5700086600 and then east and south to a point NT5980086300, thence south-east to a point NT6880080100 and rejoining the coast at NT6814779413 (Dunbar) and extending to MHWS.
5. Loch Ryan - An area comprising the waters of Loch Ryan lying south of a line from NX0181973675 (Milleur Point) to NX0454074091 (Finnarts Point) and extending to MHWS.
6. Ayrshire Coast - An area bounded by the coast and a line from a point at NS1783948444 (Farland Head) to point NS2104143938 and thence to the coast at NS2197744291 (Montfode) and extending to MHWS.
7. Kyles of Bute - An area comprising the waters lying generally north of the Isle of Bute, bounded on the west by a line from NR9937363899 (Ardlamont Point) to NS0254966033 (Kildavanan Point) and in the east by a line from NS0749969693 (Ardmaleish Point) to NS0769771477 (Strone Point) and extending to MHWS.
8. Loch Fyne Coastal Strip - An area comprising the waters of Loch Fyne bounded by the MHWS and a line 100 metres seaward of MLWS, extending from NR9129957344 (Skipness Point) to NR9937363899 (Ardlamont Point) excluding from NR8515784002 to NR8772583895 (Loch Gilp) and from NN0890307296 to NN1037709624 (Inveraray).
9. Lochs Long and Goil - An area comprising the waters of Lochs Long and Goil bounded by MHWS and a line 100m seaward of MLWS extending from NS1937984627 (Gairletter Point) to NS2490996386 (Glenmallan), but excluding between NN1920901090 and NS2024199955 (Lochgoilhead) and between NN2852103858 and NN2886103178 (Arrochar).
