A consultation on UK policy for the long term management of solid low level radioactive waste was issued on 28 February 2006. This consultation was sponsored jointly by the Scottish Executive, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Welsh Assembly Government and the Northern Ireland Department of the Environment. The consultation closed on 31 May 2006.

Preparations for this consultation were undertaken by the sponsoring organisations and included the organisation of two workshops (21-22 April 2005 and 6 October 2005). Around 60 organisations having relevant interests were invited to provide representatives. The LLW consultation document was completed following the second workshop.
