3. Re-use envelopes instead of throwing them away.

5. Turn off all lights, including fluorescent ones, when they are not needed, and make good use of natural light.
6. Switch off your TV, your computer and any other electrical equipment when you're not using them. Don't leave them on standby.
7. Don't leave mobile phones, mp3 players or other gadgets on charge for longer than necessary.
8. Make sure your washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher are full before you turn them on. If you have to do half-loads, use the economy programme.
9. Fix dripping taps and always turn the tap off as you are brushing your teeth or shaving.
10. If you must use batteries, try to use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones to cut down on waste.
11. Put lids on saucepans while cooking to save heat and retain flavour.
12. Boil only the water you need, rather than filling the kettle every time. This can save a lot of electricity - but make sure you cover the element.
13. Refuse new bags in shops and reuse old ones. Give plastic bags back to your supermarket for recycling.
14. Heat small meals in a microwave oven to save energy.
15. Use more fresh loosely packed food where possible and cut down on packaging waste..

17. Rather than throwing away, take things you no longer need to a charity shop.
18. Walk, cycle or use public transport to get to work. Or share car journeys with a friend or colleague.

20. Turn your central heating thermostat down by one degree centigrade and put on more clothing when you feel the cold. This could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent.
