Small changes in daily lifestyles can make a big difference and ensure Scotland does its bit to tackle climate change.
In the bathroom
Don't leave the tap running while you brush your teeth
Fit your toilet with a water-saving device, such as a brick or a 'hippo' , they save water every time you flush. Or you could consider a dual flush toilet. Free devices for Scottish Water customers are available
Take a shower instead of a bath - it uses around a third of the water and saves time and money. Although power showers use as much water as a bath!
In the kitchen
Don't use a running tap to wash your hands, dishes or vegetables - put the plug in or use a basin instead
Defrost food in the fridge or the microwave, not under a running tap
Make sure your washing machine and dishwasher are full before you use it. If you have to do a smaller wash use a half load cycle
If you're buying a new washing machine or dishwasher, go for a more efficient rating. The most efficient have an A rating
Consider fitting self-closing tap conversions to your existing taps or change to spray taps
Outside - in the garden
Use a watering can instead of a hose for your plants - it's more accurate
Plants prefer rainwater to tap water, so the more rainwater you can store in your garden the better. Use a water butt to collect rainwater for watering your garden
Water the garden in the early morning or evening - this will reduce the amount of water lost through evaporation
Use a bucket instead of a hosepipe to wash your car. If you must use a hosepipe, fit it with a trigger nozzle so it only runs when you need it
Use a brush to clean paths, patios and driveways not a hose
