Action 50

"Scotland must look to these new markets for solutions that result in good economic returns to agriculture, while also meeting our wider environmental objectives, such as reducing the use of non-renewable energy."

Progress

The Scottish Executive is fully committed to the development and enhancement of all forms of renewable energy and better use of our resources, both in materials and technology. Bio-energy sources such as energy crops and forestry wood-fuel are carbon neutral over their life cycle and have the potential to make a significant contribution to renewable energy and climate change. Biomass is a major source of energy throughout the world and enhancing biomass power is among the priority areas in the Scottish Executive strategy in meeting the targets set for increased generation from all renewable sources. On 31 January 2005, the Executive's Forum for Renewable Energy Development in Scotland (FREDS), published an action plan for promoting and developing the use of biomass technologies with particular reference to wood fuel. The recommended actions will be taken forward by a range of stakeholders.
