Action 35

Action 35

"Western Isles Enterprise (WIE), in partnership with others, will work with the farming and crofting community in the Western Isles to agree a strategic framework which identifies the concerns facing that community with the aim of improving the prosperity of farming businesses and developing alternative sources of income."

Progress

A partnership was brought together under the auspices of the Western Isles Enterprise (WIE), to write a Strategic Framework for the Western Isles. On 9 December 2002 the Strategic Framework for Crofting and Farming in the Western Isles was presented to and endorsed by the Agriculture Strategy Implementation Group, then formally launched in the Western Isles at a public meeting on 16 December 2002. The Strategy identified 6 Strategic Goals, namely:

  • Developing thriving communities
  • Achieving recognition
  • Quality produce and products
  • Enhancing the local food economy
  • Positive land management
  • Working together

A Strategy Implementation Group, comprising local agencies and industry representatives, was convened to lead/monitor the implementation of the Strategy. The Group identified and prioritised actions and charged lead agency groups with responsibility for overseeing/implementing specific actions through, for example, projects and pilot schemes in local communities. Visit the WIE website for information about the developmental work being taken forward in that regard. The lead agency groups comprise representatives from:-

  • Comhairle nan Eilean Siar
  • Western Isles Enterprise
  • Crofters Commission
  • Communities Scotland
  • Scottish Natural Heritage
  • Scottish Crofting Foundation
  • Western Isles Tourist Board
  • Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD)
  • Producer organisations, as appropriate.

As at February 2005, work is in hand to re-shape the Strategic Framework and to re-constitute the Strategy Implementation Group.
