Action 34

Action 34

"Scottish Enterprise Borders, in partnership with other organisations in the area, will implement a new co-ordinated advice and guidance service to assist farmers develop new and additional business and income opportunities. This will include business advice, information provision, sharing best practice and improving the networking between all relevant agencies and bodies. This model will be made available to the rest of the Enterprise Networks throughout Scotland."

Progress

Scottish Enterprise Borders appointed Farm Business Advisers as part of the Business Gateway services to local businesses. This means that the approach to farm businesses is an integrated element of the delivery process. The advisers deliver business advice to individuals and groups of farmers and organise training events covering business skills such as financial management, marketing, diversification and idea generation.

Farm Business Advisers have created close working relationships with other agencies operating in the area. This avoids duplication of effort and adds value to the advice and guidance on offer to the farmer.

This model of support has been presented to the Enterprise Networks via the Scottish Enterprises Network Rural Policy Group and the Business Gateway and has been adopted by some other Enterprise Companies.

Under A National Strategy for Farm Business Advice and Skills various FarmBASS initiatives have been introduced to support Local Enterprise Companies. The progress reports under Action 1 and Action 2 provide further information.
