Action 32

"From July 2001, grant schemes offering £70 million over the following 5 years will be available throughout Scotland to help farmers wanting to restructure and diversify their businesses."

Progress

The Agricultural Business Development Scheme (ABDS) and the Farm Business Development Scheme (FBDS) opened to applicants in 2001.

The schemes operate within the ambit of the Rural Development Regulation (EC) No 1257/99. Their aim is to increase the income generating capacity of the farming family. They were designed in full consultation with partners and are being delivered through innovative arrangements which involve representatives from partner organisations sitting on local project assessment committees. As at 31 October 2004, the two schemes had awarded over £20.3 million in grant support to 1,425 successful projects.

The schemes are excellent examples of how partnerships can work together in the interests of the people of Scotland.

SEERAD continues to work closely with partners and stakeholders to develop and deliver both schemes. The schemes are scheduled to close during 2006 and the innovative delivery arrangements are now firmly established and working well.
