Action 20

Action 20

"Pilot projects will be starting in the Borders and Grampian involving farmers, the Employment Service, the Local Enterprise Companies and the Scottish Executive, to look at how the industry can make better use of the New Deal Jobs Option and Modern Apprenticeships to bring people into the industry and offer them the right training. This work will also look at how the industry can work with Careers Scotland to promote itself better to young people as a worthwhile career."

Progress

Lantra have begun, with support from Scottish Enterprise, to improve awareness, uptake and access to land based Modern Apprenticeships in Scotland. Young people, parents and employers are to receive information through a targeted promotional campaign.

Successful apprentices will gain a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) level 3, core skills and a number of relevant professional and technical certificates. Scottish Modern Apprenticeships are available through Skillseekers.

The Local Enterprise network has delivered three half-day workshops aimed at raising awareness of agri-environment and biodiversity issues and developing conservation skills. A further pilot series of workshops and farm visits are planned for the Highlands and Islands in 2005.
