Action 12

"Our food industry has a history of distrust of other people in the supply chain. Short-term gain has been put above long-term relationships. This must change from the initial producer through to the final retailer if farming - and the whole food industry - is to see long-term benefits."

Progress

There have been several strands of work carried out under this action.

  • The Executive is participating in the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) initiatives in this area - eg, the Red Meat Industry Forum's study project to identify inefficiencies in the red meat food chain and make recommendations for change.
  • The Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society (SAOS), through its grant related activities is entirely focussed on increasing co-operative and collaborative activity and in shortening the supply chain.
  • The Executive has used its grant schemes to encourage collaborative relationships through giving priority to applications which demonstrate this.
  • SEERAD is working with the Food Industry Strategy Group (ISG), which comprises senior figures in the food industry in Scotland, as well as representatives of the Enterprise network and research bodies, to improve supply chain communication.
