8. Rents lost because of voids (Charts 11 and 12)

Councils project that they will lose £18.0m due to voids in 2008-09. This represents 2.1% of standard rent income and is at about the same level as last year and well below the peak of 3.7% in 2002-03. The percentage of rent expected to be lost through voids in 2008-09 ranges from 0.6% of standard rent income in Moray to 5.6% in West Dunbartonshire. Levels of rent lost may be significantly influenced by factors such as different levels of demand for properties, different void management practices and targets, decanting for improvement or investment programmes or the inclusion of properties lying empty or awaiting demolition.
