3. Number of council houses (Chart 1)
There are projected to be 322,900 council houses in Scotland on 30 September 2008. The number of council houses has fallen by around 47% from September 1997 to September 2008. About 150,000 (52%) of the estimated 290,000 reduction is due to sales to sitting tenants, around 100,000 is due to the transfer by 6 councils of their total housing stock to housing associations, and about 40,000 is due to demolition of unsuitable stock.
