4 Drinking Water Quality by Region
Introduction
This section looks at drinking water quality in the five Waterwatch Scotland panel areas. For ease of reference the Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles panel area is referred to as the "Islands" throughout the Regional section and all the panel areas are further broken down into the constituent local authority areas (Map 4).
This section highlights a number of specific water quality issues, and DWQR's approach to resolving these. Where one or more parameters fail to meet the regulatory standard and are likely to continue to fail, DWQR will ask Scottish Water to apply for an Authorised Departure, which includes a commitment to make improvements to the supply concerned and to ensure that it meets the relevant standards. Under certain circumstances, an Undertaking may be sought from Scottish Water, although for all practical purposes this operates in exactly the same way as an Authorised Departure.
Where a water quality issue is more urgent, or it is considered that the above approach has not delivered the required improvements, DWQR can take enforcement action against Scottish Water requiring it to carry out the prescribed action by a specified date.
Where large numbers of consumer complaints are received from a certain area, the DWQR will investigate and request that Scottish Water take any action necessary to resolve the problem.
