4. ADAPTING TO THE IMPACTS
Progress outlined in the other routemaps shows efforts to mitigate climate change through the reduction of emissions; the Adaptation Routemap shows the efforts being made to enable Scotland to adapt to the changes which are likely to result from the effects of climate change. Research shows that, even with the ambitious carbon reduction targets, a certain degree of climate change is unavoidable due to the production of past and present greenhouse gas emissions.
Work on adaptation strategies for both Scotland and the UK is ongoing. This is being done in parallel with climate change scenarios work which will help give a picture of the types of impacts likely to be faced in future years. Specific work is being done on flooding, forestry, the marine environment and roads. Scotland's Climate Change Adaptation Strategy will be consulted on over summer 2008. Consultation on the future of flood risk management in Scotland began in February 2008 with a view to introducing a draft Bill to the Scottish Parliament later this year.
