Technical Report: The Economic Impact of Game and Coarse Fishing in Scotland

Section 3 Expenditure on Freshwater Angling
3.0 Introduction

This section estimates total expenditures by anglers on fishing for each specie type in each region. Grouping has been required in a few cases because of inadequate numbers and in a few regions there is no record of fishing for a particular species. The outcome is some 23 sections normally presenting four tables

  • Angler days

  • The origins of the anglers concerned,

  • Salmon angler days per thousand of population

  • Expenditures and expenditure patterns.

The table Salmon angler days per thousand of population is included because it is indicative of the relative importance of angling within each region. The table contain four measures that reflect the intensity of angling within the region. First the number of local angler days per head of population is a measure of the local participation rate for that type of angling. Second the number of Scottish visitors per head of local population reflecting the importance of the Scottish visitor to the region. Similarly the number of foreign angler days per head reflects the intensity of non-Scottish visitors to the region. Finally the overall importance of fishery type is captured by the ratio of the total fishing days to the local population.

For comparison the table also contains estimates for Scotland as whole. For example from table 3.1.1.3 it can be seen that there is more local participation in salmon angling, more visiting Scottish angler effort, more foreign and more total angler effort than on average in Scotland as a whole.

3.1 Dumfries and Galloway

3.1.0 The Region

The region covers the old L.A. Region and the current LEC area of Dumfries and Galloway. The major rivers run south into the Solway Firth and include the Nith, Annan and Luce. There is a particularly vibrant coarse fishery in the region.
