Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Patricia Ferguson, today announced the appointment of John Fraser, Graeme Marchbank, David Sole and the reappointment of Steven Grimmond to the board of sportscotland.

John Fraser is a Neighbourhood Manager within the Children and Families Department of the City of Edinburgh Council. A former international shinty player, Mr Fraser was previously Headteacher of Craigmount High School. He is currently involved in developing a sports academy for young people in Edinburgh.

Graeme Marchbank is currently Head of Corporate Sponsorship and Events for Diageo in the Corporate Relations Team. In the past he has been the Director of Golf at Gleneagles Hotel as well as Director of Tour Operations with the Ladies European Tour.

David Sole is currently a management consultant for Whitehead Mann where he advises senior executives across a diverse range of industries. Mr Sole played international rugby for Scotland for seven years and toured with the British Lions. He has also worked for Diageo in a number of strategic roles.

All the new appointees hold no other Ministerial Appointments.

Steven Grimmond is the Head of Community Services at Fife Council. His current responsibilities span sports and leisure provision, museums and heritage, arts and cultural development, and community learning and development. Mr Grimmond previously held posts at Aberdeenshire Council, before becoming Director of Arts and Heritage and then Director of Leisure and Arts at Dundee City Council. He is a Fellow of the RSA; a COSLA Adviser on Sport and the Arts; a Council member of The Scottish Arts Council for which he is not remunerated; Executive Member and previous Chair of VOCAL.

The reappointment of Mr Grimmond will be for three years and runs from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009. The appointments for the new members will be for four years and will run from January 22, 2007 to January 21, 2011.

The posts are part-time and are not remunerated. sportscotland Board members are expected to prepare for and attend approximately six Board meetings a year and may be involved in additional meetings and events.

sportscotland is Scotland's national agency for sport. Its main aims are to work with partners to increase participation and improve performance in Scottish sport. sportscotland receives funding from both the Scottish Executive and the lottery and distributes this funding primarily to local authorities and Scottish governing bodies of sport to meet these twin goals.

These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, none of the appointees have been involved in any political activity.
