Her Majesty The Queen, on the recommendation of the First Minister, has appointed Dr Robert A McCreadie QC, Mr A Grant McCulloch, Solicitor Advocate and Mr Alistair J M Duff, Solicitor Advocate to be Sheriffs of Tayside Central and Fife. Dr McCreadie will be a resident Sheriff at Perth, while Mr McCulloch and Mr Duff will take up post at Dundee.

Dr McCreadie was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1992 and took silk in 2003. He began his career as a lecturer in law before becoming standing junior counsel to the Scottish Office in 1994 serving in the Transport then Home and Health departments. In 1995 he became Advocate Depute in the Crown Office until 2002, when he became standing junior counsel to the Advocate General for Scotland handling mainly devolution and human rights issues, the post he currently holds. He has tribunal experience and became a part-time sheriff in 2003.

Admitted as Solicitor in 1976, Mr McCulloch became Solicitor Advocate in 1992. He has been a partner in the firm of Drummond Miller since 1979 and since 2004 has been a part-time Deputy Chair of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals Panel. He has Tribunal experience and served as Temporary Sheriff from 1992-2000. In 2003 he was appointed part-time sheriff.

Mr Duff was admitted as Solicitor in 1977 and became Solicitor Advocate in 1993. From 1977 to 1981 he was a Depute in the Procurator Fiscal Service serving in Lanark, Hamilton, Glasgow and Edinburgh and then Crown Office.
In 1981 he became an assistant and then partner in More & Co, Edinburgh before founding with others the firm of McCourts in 1991. He has been a member of the Parole Board for Scotland since April 2003.

These appointments follow a recruitment exercise carried out by the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland. The Board advertised the posts at Perth and Dundee in the national and legal press and more than sixty applications were received from Advocates and Solicitors in all branches of the legal profession.

A shortlist of applicants was interviewed by panels comprising six members of the Board. The panel report was agreed by the full Board and submitted to the First Minister, who accepted its recommendations. The appointees will take up post during the course of the next three months.
